Jaya demands separate pay commission for doctors

Chennai, Apr 22 (UNI) AIADMK General Secretary J Jayalalithaa today demanded that the Tamil Nadu Government constitute a separate pay commission for doctors, who were fighting for a pay hike.

In a statement here, she said the doctors, working as professors in government medical colleges, were getting less pay, compared to professors in government arts colleges and private professional colleges.

Ms Jayalalithaa pointed out that the doctors, serving in government hospitals and medical colleges in Andhra Pradesh, were paid as per the University Grants Commission (UGC), while those in Karnataka were paid as per the recommendations of the All India Council for Technical Education and in Puducherry, on a par with the central government employees.

Only in Tamil Nadu, the doctors, in government hospitals and Medical Colleges were in a pathetic condition. While those in government hospitals were given three promotions, doctors in medical colleges were given only two promotions in the state, she said.

At a time when the prices of essentials were spiralling and the rate of inflation was touching a new high, the DMK Government should come forward to remove the anomalies and render justice to the doctors by setting up a separate pay commission for them, she added.

The government should take steps to get the recommendations of the pay commission before implementing the Sixth Pay Commission recommendations, she said.
