Kolkata, Apr 22 (UNI) Globalisation has given rise to technology and consumerism which in turn has resulted in generation of considerable amount of pollutants, said Minister in charge of Environment Sailen Sarkar said today.

Presenting the Environment Excellence Award here, Mr Sarkar said April 22 is being celebrated as the Earth Day since the seventies all over the world for building a better, cleaner ambience for all inhabitants. However, if the major companies in India and all over the world do not co-operate, the governments alone cannot do much, he rued.

Urging all industrialists to abide by the regulatory frameworks set by the government and proactively participate in creating a cleaner environment for inhabitants of the ecosystem all over the world, Mr Sarkar gave away the Environment Excellence award to people who have achieved eminence in large and small-scale industry, NGO and service sectors.

In the largescale industry sector, the first prize was awarded to Phoenix Yule, the second to South Asian Petrochom Ltd, while the third prize was jointly awarded to CESC and Ultratech Cement.

In the smallscale sector, the award was collected by Bristol Petroleum Pvt Ltd and two certificates went out to MPS Food Products Ltd and Meghna Group.

In the NGO sector, the first prize was awarded to Alinan Ramkrishna Vivekananda Yuva Sangha, the second prize to Pragati Sevayatan Kendra, while the third prize was given Kamarpara Rammohan Rural Development Society.

In the service sector, the first prize was awarded to ITC Hotels.

Railings collapse in temple; consecration cancelled
