BCCI assures sporting pitch before Kolkata-Mumbai clash

Kolkata, Apr 22 (UNI) BCCI's pitch and grounds committee chairman Daljit Singh today assured of a batting pitch at Eden Gardens before Kolkata-Mumbai T-20 tie on April 29 and said he was not opposed to hiring a foreign expert by the Red Chillies Entertainment.

After inspecting Eden's Gardens pitch, Singh suggested for an alternate wicket for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Mumbai Eleven match scheduled to be held on April 29 and asked the groundsmen to pour plenty of water to beat dryness on the surface.

Singh was specially flown in here today after BCCI joint secretary M P Pandove had asked him to rush in following widespread criticism after low scoring tie between KKR and Deccan Chargers-Hyderabad April 20.

He told reporters that the organisers must have Cricket Association of Bengal and IPL committee's approval before calling in a foreign expert to have his opinion on pitch. But if the organsiers had already talks with him (foreign expert), they could go ahead with the proposal.

Talks were going among the organisers to call Australian pitch expert Les Burdett and have his say on making a sporting pitch at the Eden Gardens.

Singh said, CAB curator Kalyan Mitra was one of the hardworking groundsmen in the country and he found nothing wrong with erratic behaviour of Eden's central pitch. He said since it was summer and dry, the pitch's surface breaks off easily.

Singh suggested for an alternate sporting pitch before the second tie at Eden.

He said, he would rather assist Kalyan Mitra to prepare surface as ''we have enough time for pitch preparation''.

Meanwhile, the CAB yesterday constitued a three-member committee with secretary Samar Pal, assistant secretary Snehashis Ganguly and Kalyan Mitra to probe why the pitch behaved erratically at Eden.

CAB president Prasun Mukherjee on power cut and alternative arrangments said there was no generator available to supplement lights at the stadium.

Power shortage for half-an-hour at Eden had forced stoppage of match at the crucial fag end and also rocked the state since Sunday night, while a blame game among CESE, CAB and IPL managment was on.

The matter had now reached at corridor of power in the state.

Meanwhile, KKR skipper Sourav Ganguly, however, said the erratic behaviour of the Eden pitch was not the first time. Earlier, in the 1996 World Cup the pitch behave the same way.
