5-member com to probe power failure, inadequate water at Eden

Kolkata,Apr 22(UNI) The West Bengal Government is constituting a five-member committee to probe the sudden power failure and inadequate supply of drinking water in the Eden Gardens during the Indian Premier League cricket match between Kolkata Knight Riders and Deccan Chargers on Sunday last.

"A committee is being constituted to look into the matter. I had talks with Sports Minister Subhas Chakraborty and I asked him to give names of the committee members," Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee told reporters.

Earlier, Mr Chakraborty said he had sent his recommendation to the Chief Minister for an inquiry into the reasons that led to disruption in the match for about 31 minutes.

Yesterday, the sports Minister had said the Eden incident had tarnished the image of the city to some extent.

He said the committee would submit its report before the next IPL match at the Eden Gardens to be held on April 29.

Criticising the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB), Mr Chakraborty said the lapses occurred due to the inexperience of CAB officials. The CAB also failed to coordinate with the state government which could have made the arrangements foolproof, he alleged.

The proposed committee would comprise officials from police, PWD and the Sports department.

Official sources said the committee would be formally announced tomorrow.
