100 nominations for first phase of election

Bangalore, Apr 22 (UNI) As many as 100 candidates today filed nominations on the penultimate day for filing papers for the First Phase of the Karantaka Assembly elections scheduled for May ten.

According to official sources here, a maximum of 38 nominations were received for 21 Assembly seats in Bruhath Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) followed by 14 in Mandya district and nine each in Kolar, Tumkur and Chamarajanagar.

''Tomorrow is the last date for filing of nominations for 89 Assembly seats in 11 southern districts of Karnataka. About 43 per cent of the total number of 4,00,77,000 voters will exercise their franchise in the first phase,'' the sources said.

Former Karnataka Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy (JD-S), former Ministers B N Bachegowda (BJP), V Somanna (Cong), H D Revanna (JD-S) and Cheluvarayaswamy (JD-S) had already filed their nominations for the May ten elections.

The Election Commission officials had seized a large number of illegal publicity materials, including a number of vehicles used for campaigning without permission and impounded cash worth over Rs 14 crore, and booked as many as over 500 criminal cases for allegedly violating the election code of conduct.

Meanwhile, about ten nominations were received for the second phase of elections for 66 seats in ten districts, for which election authorities issued notifications today.

Pune to be linked non-stop to Europe by Lufthansa

Pune, Apr 22 (UNI) Lufthansa will operate non-stop flights between Pune and Frankfurt from July one onwards.
