Cervical cancer on rise in rural Bihar

Patna, Apr 21: Cases of cervical cancer among women in rural Bihar are on the rise because of inadequate and unhygenic water supply. Speaking at a seminar on Oncology, jointly organised by the Association of Gynaecological Oncology of India, Bihar Obstetrics and Gynaecology Society and Mahaveer Cancer Society, Dr Jitendra Kumar Singh, Director Mahaveer Cancer Sansthan, said here yesterday that lack of adequate water supply was the main cause of increasing number of cases of cervical cancer among women in the rural segment.

''The women in rural areas suffer from cervical cancer because they fail to keep their bodies clean and maintain it properly as a result of which they fall victim to the chronic disease,'' he added. Women in rural areas fail to keep their private parts clean due to lack of privacy and non-availability of hygenic water Dr Singh informed. Early marriages and several children were some of the other causes of cervical cancer among the women, he further added. The disease could be controlled if diagnosed at the initial stage, Dr Singh said, adding such seminars would help create awareness.
