Olympic flame ends Bangkok run with no disruption

Bangkok, Apr 19 (UNI) A tight security cover and a sizeable Chinese-origin population ensured a smooth run for the Olympic flame through the streets of the Thai capital this evening.

Barring a demonstration by scores of pro-Tibet activists outside the UN office, who were outnumbered and booed by pro-Chinese local supporters, there was no attempt to disrupt the three-hour relay run.

About 80 Thai athletes and other leading citizens took part in the run that began in the city's Chinese quarter, passed by historic Bangkok landmarks and ended at the Royal Plaza near the parliament building.

Thousands of cheering supporters holding Chinese, Thai and Olympic flags lined the 10.6 km route of the Olympic flame relay accompanied by its special blue track-suited Chinese security contingent.

The Olympic torch now leaves Thailand on its way to Kuala Lumpur and then Jakarta.
