India hopes Civil 'N' energy cooperation with US is possible soon

New Delhi, Apr 19 (UNI) India today called for an effective energy strategy, combining augmentation and conservation, and hoped that the civilian nuclear energy cooperation with the US and other friendly countries would become possible soon.

Foreign Secretary Shivshankar Menon, in his keynote address at the First IISS-Citi India Global Forum, said the primary objective of India's foreign policy was to successfully counter the challenges of maintaining the current growth trajectory which would depend on the ability to meet the rising energy requirements.

''To successfully meet these challenges, we also require an external environment which is conducive to India's transformation and continued development. This remains the prmary objective of our foreign policy,'' he said.

The Foreign Secretary said India has a vital stake in the promotion of an environment of peace and stability in the region and the world which would facilitate its accelerated socio-economic development, safeguard national security and lead to greater strategic harmony.
