DUJ condemns veteran scribes arrest in UP

New Delhi, Apr 19 (UNI) Expressing concern over the arrest of senior journalist Mehruddin Khan in Uttar Pradesh, the DUJ today urged the state government intervene and secure his release.

''It is a matter of serious concern that Dr Khan has been arrested for a news report he wrote on the alleged highhandedness of police in Muzaffarnagar,'' DUJ President S K Pande said.

He said Dr Khan, who is in jail for the past ten days, is not keeping well and his health is deteriorating.

''Home Minister Shivraj Patil, the Press Council and the National Human Rights Commission have been informed about his arrest,'' he added.

Mr Pande said an emergency meeting of the DUJ is slated for Tuesday to take stock of the latest developments and chalk out further course of action.

Meanwhile, the Janvadi Lekhak Sangh has also condemned the arrest of the scribe.

RJD demands compensation for cracker factory blast victims

Patna, Apr 19 (UNI) The RJD has expressed sorrow over the death of eight people in a blast in a cracker factory in Jehanabad district today and demanded that the Bihar government pay Rs five lakh as compensation to the next of the kin of each victim. Advani to make one-day visit to Guj tomorrow

Ahmedabad, Apr 19 (UNI) Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha L K Advani will pay a one-day visit to Gujarat, tomorrow. According to Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) sources here today, the senior leader will be attending several functions in the city.
