Islamabad, Apr 18 : Pakistan's Attorney General (AG), Malik Qayyum, has said that around 97 per cent of eligible voters were deprived of their democratic right to contest the polls because they were not graduates.
Qayyum called for the removal of the law at the hearing of a petition that challenged the graduation condition.
"The country had 68.1 million voters, of whom only 2.6 million (3.2 percent) were graduates," the Daily Times quoted Qayyum as saying.
During the hearing, the Supreme Court Bench directed Qayyum to submit data about the total population, the number of registered voters and registered graduates, especially province-wise.
The next hearing of the petion will take place on Monday.
There are 0.2 million graduates in the NWFP, 10,174 in the tribal areas, 1.22 million in the Punjab, 0.9 million in Sindh, 58,000 in Balochistan and 73,937 in Islamabad.
