Maharashtra govt to seek restoration of medical seats

Mumbai, Apr 16 (UNI) The Maharashtra government will seek central government's help to restore seats in post-graduate medical courses across the state, Minister for Higher and Technical Education Dilip Walse Patil informed the state legislative council today.

While taking serious note of the reduction in medical seats in the state, Patil said he will meet the Union Health Minister A Ramadoss in this regard, with a request to restore the same. The seats were earlier reduced by an order of the Medical Council of India (MCI).

He said Director of Medical Education of the state will have a meeting on the issue in a couple of days. The issue was raised by Dr Deepak Sawant (Shiv Sena), who wanted to know why seats were being reduced despite MCI having four members from the state.

He said there were 1,900 seats in 2001 for PG courses and this year it was reduced to 411.

It may be recalled that doctors from all over the state and municipal run hospitals, along with medical students and interns began a strike from yesterday, protesting the reduction in seats.

The post-graduate students are appointed as resident doctors at several government run hospitals and if the number of students come down, the post of resident doctors will automatically be reduced, Dr Sawant later told mediapersons, after the minister's announcement in this regard.

According to a top officer in the medical education department, the seats were reduced due to inadequate infrastructure.
