TN: KMCH inks MoU with Japanese firm

Tiruchirapalli, Apr 16: City-based Kaveri Medical Centre and Hospital (KMCH) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Nichi-In Centre for Regenerative Medicine (NCRM), Japan, to carry out stem cells researches.

In a statement here today, KMCH Managing Director S Chandrakumar said stem cell transplant was a complex procedure, which replaced unhealthy cells with healthy ones. During the transplant healthy stem cells would be infused into the body, which would then begin normal production of blood cells.

The stem cells taken from a patient would be processed and infused into the blood stream of the same patient. The process had not shown any immunological rejection so far, according to Stem Cell Therapy Director S Sankaranarayanan.

NCRM Director Samuel J K Abraham said the NCRM was started as Nichi-In Bio Sciences Private Ltd to carry out research, training and clinical application-protocol development in cell therapeutics with emphasis on stem cells, apart from coordinating collaborative researches between Indian and Japanese Institutes.

He said the stem cell therapy was to help the patients, who could not be cured through regular treatment methods.
