'Dearth of faculty affecting quality of medical education'

Tiruchirapalli, Apr 16 (UNI) MGR Medical University Vice-Chancellor K Meer Musthafa Hussain has observed that shortage of medical professors has led to decline in the quality of medical education.

Speaking at a function here last night, Dr Hussain pointed out that the increasing specialisations in the field had created a demand for teachers in anatomy, physiology and biochemistry, who were well-paid at private medical colleges.

Seats for Post-Graduate medical programmes across the country were insufficient to accommodate even a small chunk of MBBS graduates, he said and hoped that the Post-Graduate seats in private medical colleges would be increased to meet the rising demand.

Despite a substantial increase in healthcare facilities in the country, the doctor-patient ratio was highly disturbing, he said.

Referring to the practical exposure to medical students, Dr Hussain said the students in India enjoy a good amount of training resources that the students in Western countries lack.
