Ayodhya/Lucknow, Apr 14 (UNI) The Birthplace of 'maryada purshotam' Ram today celebrated Ramnavmi with full religious fervour with lakhs of devotees taking holy dip in river Saryu and paying obeisance at temples.
About 20 Lakhs of devotees from different parts of country converged in the holy city and performed ritual ablusion in the sacred river and offered prayers at several temples.
Special cultural programmes were organised in Kanak Bhawan temple , besides singing 'sohar' (traditional songs that were sung during the birth of son) on the auspicious occassion.
Eunuchs also participated in the celebration and danced with full zeal and enthusiasm.
Tight security arrangements were made to avoid any untoward incident.
Around two lakh devotees also seethed at controversial 'Ram Janambhumi' and worshiped 'Ramlala,' Superintendent of police Gopesh Nath said. Other temples of the city also witnessed big gathering, he added.
Lord Ram's 'Janam Divas' was also enthusiastically celebrated in entire Uttar Pradesh, where every Ram temple was tastefully decorated.
People thronged at temples to worship Shri Ram.
'Akhand Ramayan' was also organised at several places and entire state echoed with 'shankh' and temple bells.
