Washington, Apr 14 : American singer Madonna has slammed the new generation of pop and rock stars, saying they are too "bourgeois" to follow in her footsteps.

The pop diva claims that her career has achieved longevity because it has been forged out of the ashes of the punk movement of the 1970s.

The 'Like a Virgin' star criticized the 'crotch-flashing' habits of the current batch of young performers, including her former protegee Britney Spears.

"I came on the heels of punk. There was lots of stuff going on, but there wasn't the coverage," Contactmusic quoted her, as telling Elle magazine.

"This new Hollywood generation is not punk rock. They are more bourgeois. It's time to flash something new," she added.
