Jobless Mizo youths vulnerable to human trafficking

Aizawl, Apr 14 (UNI) Increasing joblessness has made the educated Mizo youths vulnerable to human trafficking, a growing menace in economically backward regions of the world, says a Human Rights and Law Network (HR&LN) report.

Concerned over this issue, the Aizawl-based Human Rights Group on Saturday filed an FIR with the Aizawl police against an Aizawl-based job consultant Dynamic Consultancy.

According to the FIR, as many as 19 Mizo youths, including four women, had responded to an advertisement floated by the agency, which promised "well-paid jobs" in Bangalore.

After depositing an amount of Rs 50,000 each to the agency, the youths left Aizawl on March 30, the FIR stated.

However, after reaching the destination, the youths realised that they had been duped. A few of them found jobs, which, however, were poorly paid, not even enough for sustenance,'' Dr Lalhmanmawia, coordinator of HR&LN told UNI here today.

Acting on the FIR, police began probe into the agency.

''We have not made any major breakthrough as yet. As suggested by the complainant, we have decided to wait for the alleged victims to return and hear them out,'' Police Officer in-Charge Lianhmingthanga told UNI here over the telephone today.

The OC was discussing the matter with the complainant and the defendant at his office, while filing the report. This was the second such complaint the Aizawl police received this year.

Earlier this year, a state labour officer lodged a complaint against another Aizawl-based job providing agency Mizo Manpower Supplier, alleging that a number of Mizo youths had found themselves in trouble after getting "job placements" in different countries through the agency.

Dr Lalhmanmawia said the entire Northeastern region has become vulnerable to this menace and that Mizoram was not an exception.

''With increasing unemployment in the state, political leaders keep encouraging the educated youths to venture outside the state.

In this situation, handsomely paying jobs are hard to resist for the youths. But this has made them vulnerable to human trafficking,'' he said.

Mizo communities in different metros in the country have several times warned people in Mizoram to be cautious about their children going into the metros, he added.

So far, Mizoram has recorded 16 cases of human trafficking, Dr Lalhmanmawia said, adding that, it is certain that there have been many unrecorded cases.

The HR&LN has organised a number of seminars and talk shows to make the youth aware of the danger of human trafficking.
