Mumbai, Apr 14 (UNI) Maharashtra Governor S C Jamir today called for efforts to imbibe a sense of responsibility about fire prevention and safety among citizens.
The Governor was addressing the Chief Fire Officers of various Municipal Corporations and major establishments in the state after inaugurating the ''Fire Service Week'' at the Raj Bhawan here.
Mr Jamir, while referring to the recent fires in Mumbai and Kolkata that had caused large scale destruction and loss of property, said in addition to providing proper training and modern equipment to the fire fighting personnel, direct involvment of citizens was necessary while coping with such exigencies.
The Governor on the occasion also launched`the Maharashtra Fire Services Personnel Welfare Fund Raising Campaign by making his donation to the fund.
Fire Advisor to the Government of Maharashtra M V Deshmukh presented the Fire Services Pin Flag to the Governor on the occasion.
The Fire Service Week is observed every year from April 14 to 20 as a tribute to the gallant fire officers and firemen who laid down their life while fighting a major dock explosion which had occurred on April 14, 1944, in which 66 fire officers and firemen had been killed. The event also aims to spread awareness among the citizens about fire prevention.
