Afghan blast victim's family mourn in Tamil Nadu

Thippnanapalli (TN), Apr 14: The family of C. Govindasamy, an Indian engineer who was killed in a suicide bomb blast in Afghanistan on Saturday, is in a state of mourning in Tamil Nadu's Krishnagiri District. Forty-five year old Govindasamy had been working in Afghanistan for the past year and is survived by his wife Sivagami, three daughters and a son.

"We were shocked when we heard the news. I could not believe the death of my husband. There is no one to support us and how will I manage?" asked Sivakami, Govindasamy's wife. Relatives and villagers flocked to Govindasamy's home to express their condolence.

"He left after my sister's wedding. I have not seen my father for almost a year. There is nobody. Our father was everything to us," said Bharathi, Govindasamy's daughter.

The bodies of Govindasamy and another Indian victim Mahendra Pratap Singh, a resident of Varanasi, are expected to arrive home on Monday.

Earlier, the Indian Government had confirmed the death of the two Indian Border Roads Organisation (BRO) engineers in a blast in southwest Afghanistan.

A Taliban spokesman called up a news agency in Afghanistan and claimed responsibility for the incident.

Nearly 400 BRO personnel are engaged in the construction of a crucial 218-km highway between Zaranj and Delaram in Afghanistan as part of India's assistance programme for the reconstruction of the war-torn country.
