Met office predicts heat wave conditions for next 24 hours

Bhubaneswar, Apr 12 (UNI) People in many parts of Orissa preferred to remain indoor as mercury hovered around 40 degree Celsius, two to three degree celsius above normal.

Local weather office sources here said Jharsuguda recorded 40.4 degree celsisus, the highest temperature of the day, followed by Cuttack 40.6, Bhubaneswar 39.4 and Keonjhar and Sambalpur 39 degree Celsius each.

Met office sources predicted that heatwave condition is likely to prevail in some parts of the state for the next 24 hours.

Taking a serious view of the impending situation, the state government had taken a series of measures to prevent heat related deaths.

All district collectors have been asked to monitor the situation and ensure availability of drinking water in areas facing water scarcity.

Reviewing the situation, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik directed officials to install tubewells in all habitations, villages and primary schools that do not have a water source.

All schools were directed to run from 0630 to 1030 hours from April one and daily labourers have been directed not to work from 1100 to 1500 hours.
