Hurriyat leader Mirwaiz Umer Farooq calls for probe into 1000 Kashmiri graves

Srinagar, Apr 12 : The Chairman of the moderate faction of the All Parties Hurriyat Council, Mirwaiz Umer Farooq, has demanded international investigations of the nearly thousand unmarked graves that were discovered over the past one year.

"We are first of all calling for international intervention and somebody like the United Nations or Amnesty International should take up this issue. As far as investigations are concerned, there should be impartial probe," Farooq said.

Farooq offered prayers along with residents and called for an immediate police investigation.

The graves were found in 18 villages along the Line of Control that divides India and Pakistan, the Association of Parents of Disappeared Persons (APDP) said in a weekend report after undertaking a year-long survey.

The APDP, which estimates that around 10,000 people have gone missing since 1989, says many of the missing could have ended up in these unmarked graves.
