Two get life imprisonment for murdering Dalit

Coimbatore. Apr 10 (UNI) Two youths were today sentenced to life imprisonment and two awarded six months' jail term with a fine of Rs 7,000 for murdering a Dalit in a temple at Singanallur in the city 31 years ago.

District and Sessions Judge G Chokkalingam awarded life imprisonment to Prakash and Neela Krishnan and six months' jail term to Karthik and Sampath for beating Dhandapani (20) to death on March three, 1977.

According to the prosecution, Dhandapani was attacked by the youths, who belonged to an upper caste, for having food with his school mates during the 'Samapandhi bojanam' in the temple. The seriously injured Dhandapani succumbed to his injuries at the government hospital the next day.

Two other accused in the case were acquitted as they were children.
