SC verdict victory for social justice: CM

Chennai, Apr 11: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK President M Karunanidhi today described as a ''major victory for social justice, the apex court verdict upholding 27 per cent reservation for OBCs in higher educational institutions like the IITs and IIMs.

In a statement here, he said it was a big victory for the social justice policy, which was mixed in his blood.

He said Union HRD Minister Arjun Singh's remarks that the Union Cabinet would deal with the Creamy layer issue, was satisfying.

He also recalled the resolution passed in the Tamil Nadu Assembly on March 30 last year, urging the Centre to take necessary steps in the wake of Supreme Court granting an interim stay on 27 per cent reservation for OBCs in higher educational institutions.

Mr Karunanidhi said the resolution proposed by him on that day had crossed all the obstacles and now the quota for OBCs has come to stay, thanks to the Supreme court's verdict.

The apex court's verdict has lit up the lives of OBCs, who could now have access to higher education in centrally run institutions, he added.
