Tiruchirapalli, Apr 11: A survey vessel has been conducting trial runs in the site of the ongoing Sethu Samudram Shipping Cannal Project (SSCP) at Palk Straits, according to Union Shipping, Road Transport and Highways Minister T R Baalu. Addressing the media here last night, he said the vessel had been conducting the trial run for the last two to three days and he was awaiting an assessment from the vessel. ''The trial is being conducted only at 35th km, while the legal issue pertains to 54th km of the Palk Strait,'' he said.
He dismissed the apprehensions that the area dredged out for the SSCP had got silted. He had verified it and found the apprehensions to be false. Replying to a question, he said the operation by the survey vessel would not amount to contempt of court and was not violative of the Supreme Court's directive to the Union Ministry on the SSCP, he added.
