Soaring prices: TN is in grief, yearning for prosperity, says Jaya

Chennai, Apr 11 (UNI) Former Chief Minister and AIADMK General Secretary J Jayalalithaa said the people in Tamil Nadu are in deep grief, yearning for prosperity and better situation, following the steep hike in prices of essentials and deterioration of law and order.

Camping in Kodanadu, Ms Jayalalithaa, who had a strong belief in astrology, exhorted party cadres to light lamps exactly at 1830 hrs on the auspicious full moon day on April 19 throughout the State.

Though Ms Jayalalithaa asked party cadres to light the lamps to dispel darkness that had engulfed the State since the DMK came to power, an unusual form of protest gave rise to speculations that it was aimed at invoking the blessings of God as she called upon them to say ''Amma come to dispel the darkness in Tamil Nadu''.

Ms Jayalalithaa was reverentially called as 'Amma' (mother) by her party workers.

Ms Jayalalithaa said this voice should reverberate the entire State and besides party cadres, people should also take part in the holy event aimed at spreading light in the State.

She said the lights could be either the traditional Kuthuvilakku, the religious Kamatchi vilakku or the ordinary Akal vilakku (earthern lamps), used for festivals.

The lighting of lamp protest was to instil confidence in their minds that the darkness would be dispelled and the AIADMK was capable of doing that, she added.
