NCW seeks report from police on Mandawali incident

New Delhi, Apr 11 (UNI) Taking suo-moto cognizance of the rape and assault of a woman tenant by her landlord and his family in East Delhi, a two-member NCW inquiry committee met the victim and sought a report from police about the incident.

The victim, a resident of Mandawali area, told the committee that she was first raped by the landlord and then he tried to persuade her not to file an FIR, an NCW spokesperson said.

''Despite that she went to the Police Station to lodge an FIR.

After that the she was brutally beaten up by his family members,'' she added.

The FIR was filed only on the intervention of the Commission.

According to the Police officials the first FIR has been registered for rape and accused Ram Kumar arrested.

The second FIR was lodged for assault later and the police was trying to arrest the accused who beat the victim.

Ms Yasmeen Abrar and Ms Neeva Konwar formed the inquiry committee.

Sporadic fighting as aid ship nears Jaffna

Colombo, Aug 24: Sporadic artillery fire and air strikes continued along Sir Lanka's Jaffna peninsula today as an aid ship approached the beseiged city for the first time in nearly two weeks, residents and officials said.The army said the peninsula was ''calm and quiet'', but admitted some exchange of gunfire, which was confirmed by residents.The military also said jets struck a rebel Sea Tiger base near their de facto capital of Kilinochchi today.No supplies have reached.....
