Indian English writers lack visibility : Tharoor

Kochi, Apr 11 (UNI) Well known writer Shashi Tharoor today said Indian fiction writing in English was growing but lamented that the writers were not getting enough 'visibility.' Addressing a gathering after releasing 'Maya,' a book by Goerge Thundiparambil here Mr Tharoor said, '' there is a lot of talent in English fiction writing in India, but the writers were under-appreciated and not getting visibility.'' The book sucessfully laced history in storytelling and the writer brought to the present through the characters, Mr Tharoor said.

The book set against the background of historical and present-day Fort Kochi, sketches the history of the first European trading in the country through the eyes of 'Kappiri,' a slave brought to Indian shores by Vasco da Gama on his first voyage to the East in search of Christians and spices.

Speaking on the occasion, Consul-General of India in Dubai, Venu Rajamony said '' though there were lot of writers from Kerala, who had stamped their authority in Malayalam writing, writing in English needs a lot of catching up to do in the State.'' Terming the book as an eye-opener to local history, Mr Rajamony said the education system should chalkout policies to ensure that the local history were included in the curriculum.

Mr Thundiparambil, a native of Kochi, works as a freelance translator and editor at Freiburg in Germany.
