Assam not to offer safe passage to ULFA

Guwahati, Apr 11: Assam's tough stand against the proscribed ULFA continued with the government deciding not to offer safe passage to the outfit' s members during the Rongali Bihu.

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said on April 10 that the government had not taken any decision to offer safe passage to ULFA cadres till now. He was reacting to media reports that the militants would be given permission to visit their homes during the Rongali Bihu festivities, coinciding with the Assamese new year, next week.

The government had on previous occasions offered the ULFA rebels safe passage during the festival, but this departure from the old practice is construed as reflection of the government's tough stand against the outfit.

Six NATO led troops killed in Afghan violence

Kabul, July 24: Six NATO-led soldiers were killed in the past two days in violence in Afghanistan, military spokesmen said. Four soldiers were killed and one wounded when their convoy was struck by an improvised explosive device while on combat operations in eastern Afghanistan, Lieutenant-Colonel Claudia Foss of the NATO-led forces said. The nationalities of the victims have not yet been released. One Norwegian soldier was killed in a clash to the south.....
