12.2 per cent growth in tourist arrival in 2008

New Delhi, Apr 11 (UNI) The arrival of foreign tourists to India has gone up by 12.2 per cent during the first three months of the current year.

As many as 1.65 million tourists visited the country during January-March this year as compared to 1.47 million during the same period last year.

The Foreign Exchange earning during the period totalled 16,041 million, registering a growth of 21.1 per cent as compared to the first three months of the last year.

Tourism Ministry sources said here today that the growth in the tourist arrivals during the year would surpass the previous years because of strong indications to this effect available already.

Chennai, Apr 11 (UNI) Six Indian fishermen were injured in a clash with their Lankan counterparts in the mid-sea when the latter illegally entered the Indian waters. Police said the local fishermen, hailing from Kasimedu in North Chennai, detained the ten Lankan fishermen and handed them over to local police today.
