New Delhi, Apr 10 (UNI) Lauding as a "landmark judgement" the Supreme Court order upholding 27 per cent quota to OBCs in the centrally-run institutions of higher education, the Congress today said the verdict had 'silenced' the detractors of the UPA government's reservation policy.
AICC Spokesman Abishek Manu Singhvi said the judgement was very significant as it upheld "the most remarkable, laudable initiative of the government and also of the Congress Party." He said the judgement had now 'silenced' the detractors of the government policy on reservation. "There was a whole cacophony of protests... There were all kinds of motivated allegations made against the government...All these have now been silenced." Dr Singhvi said what guided the UPA government to provide for OBC reservation was the principle that there should be co-ownership of the elements of democracy by the backward classes. A crucial element in this was co-ownership of educational facilities.
On the Supreme Court direction to exclude the creamy layer (economically forward among the OBCs) from the purview of reservation, he said the court had steered taken a middle course.
However, it did not take away the basic spirit and thrust of the judgement which upheld the government's policy of reservation for the OBCs.
Asked if the judgement would help the Congress in the forthcoming assembly and Lok sabha elections, AICC Spokesman Manish Tewari told UNI that "We do not see judgements in terms of political gain or loss. The UPA had enacted the legislation providing for 27 per cent reservation to the OBCs with a view to bringing about inclusive growth. Therefore, we don't see progressive social legislations in electoral terms. " UNI SH RL RN1839
