Orissa for amendment of Prevention of Atrocities on SC/ST Act

Bhubaneswar, Apr 10 (UNI) The Orissa government today decided to request the Union government to amend the Prevention of Atrocities on Scheduled Caste and Schedule Tribe Act for the speedy disposal of the cases.

Home Secretary T K Mishra told newspersons here that the state government had decided to request the union government to amend the Act to empower a Police Inspector to inquire the SC/ST atrocities cases.

He said the decision was taken at a meeting held here to assess the situation.

Mr Mishra said under the existing Act only a Police officer in the rank of Deputy Superintendent of Police could inquire into cases of atrocities on SC/ST.

Since the number of DSP rank officers was very less in the state inquiry into the allegations of atrocities could not be made speedily resulting in pending of number of cases.

The Home Secretary said a decision was taken to launch a month long special drive beginning from tomorrow to dispose of the pending cases.

He said during the past seven years as many as 9889 cases were reported of which 1751 were pending. While 1749 cases were reported during 2007, as many as 1500 cases were reported in the previous year, Mr Mishra said.

Three killed, 40 injured in hills of Assam

Guwahati, Apr 10 (UNI) Violence today rocked two hill districts of Assam as a powerful bomb detonated at Howraghat of Karbi Anglong district injuring 40 people, while three were killed in gunfire between Dimasa militants and security forces in the North Cachar hills. Official sources said 40 people were injured, 18 of them seriously, when a cycle bomb ripped through a market in Howraghat town. The suspected Karbi Longri National Liberation Front (KLNLF) detonated.....

CII signs MoU with UK-based Company

Patna, Apr 10: The CII today signed an MoU with A4e, a UK-based organisation, aimed at turning Bihar into the capital of skilled personnel of the world. Addressing the function, organised to mark the signing ceremony of the MoU, Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi said here that 5000 people of the state would be trained in joint collaboration of the CII and A4e, an organisation with social mission working with the UK government. The trained personnel would be placed suitably.....

Tata to invest Rs 500 Cr for telecom infrastructure in Northeast

Kolkata, Apr 10 (UNI) Tata Teleservices Ltd today signed an MoU with Assam Small Industries Development Corporation Ltd for an investment of Rs 500 crore form TTSL to exchange information, knowledge, intelligence, competence and support to each other on a long term basis. The two companies signed the Memorandum of Understanding in Jorehat in presence of Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, a TTSL communique said.
