Kerala CM responsible for Kuttanad plight: Chandy

Thiruvananthapuram, Apr 10 (UNI) Kerala Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan was responsible for the present plight of farmers in Kuttanadu, Leader of the Opposition in the Kerala Assembly Oommen Chandy said today.

Talking to newspersons here, he alleged that the Chief Minister was accusing the Centre for the price hike of essential commodities only to divert the people's attention from Kuttanad situation.

Mr Achuthanandan failed to implement the promises given to the farmers, he said and added that he also failed to provide adequate compensation to the farmers, who sufferd huge loss in the summer rains, which destroyed paddy crops worth crores.

Alleging that the Government was continuing its anti-farmer policy in the state, Mr Chandy said though the Left Democratic Front (LDF) had constituted a Farmers Debt Relief Commission(FDRC), to assist the farmers, it could not provide compensation to them.

Even the funds for the debt relief had not been allocated in the budget, he said and claimed that more than six lakh applications were pending in this regard.
