Insurance scheme for fish workers

Kochi, Apr 10 (UNI) Kerala Fisheries Minister S Sarma today said the state government would introduce an insurance scheme very soon for fish workers.

Speaking at a function here, Mr Sarma said, '' about 75 per cent of the loss incurred through damage to fishing equipment would be covered through the proposed insurance scheme.'' Reiterating the government's commitment to rejuvenating the fishing sector, Mr Sarma said, '' through the Debt Relief Act for fishermen, they will get a benefit of Rs 524 crore in 11 districts across the state.'' The Act would augur well for the future of fishermen and increase their standard of living, Mr Sarma said.

He said the state government was planning to invest Rs 3,000 crore during its five-year term to develop the fishing sector.

In the nine tsunami-hit districts, the state government was planning to open supermarkets in cooperation with Supplyco, he said.

Indo-Pak peace activists meet at Attari to defuse tensions
