Teacher beaten up by local hoodlums trying to extort money

Hooghly, Apr 07 (UNI) Local hoodlums today beat up a local high school teacher for not complying with their extortion demands, critically injuring him as well as his mother, who rushed to his rescue in the district's Sreerampur area.

Sreerampur Police Inspector in-Charge Salil Ganguly admitted of having received the information and confirmed that the school teacher has lodged a complaint with their police station.

Reportedly, local hoodlums had claimed Rs 10,000 from him after he moved in to his new house here. Unable to do so, he had tried to resolve the matter by paying an amount of Rs 1,000. But, the unhappy local club members arrived at his house this afternoon and beat up the teacher.

His mother, who was in the house, rushed to his son's rescue. As a rsult, she was beaten up as well. The school teacher, who moved into his new house only a month back, was beaten up so badly that he sustained serious head injuries.

Mr Ganguly said that his department is doing everything to ensure his arrest within the next 24 hours.

The teacher was also a member of CPI(M)-led All Bengal Teachers' Association. The Association has also demanded the arrest of the culprits as soon as possible.

The condition of the person is still stated to be serious.

HC orders compensation to dead child's parents

Kochi, Apr 7 (UNI) The Kerala High Court today directed the State Government to grant compensation of Rs five lakh to the parents of Ibin Antony, a deaf and dumb child who died due to lack of timely medical attention at the Government Vocational Higher Secondary School at Jagathy in Thiruvananthapuram. Mr Justice Thottathil B Radhakrishnan also directed payment of interest at six per cent from July six 2000, in addition to the compensation amount......

Speaker also feels only assurance, no implementation

Mumbai, Apr 7 (UNI) 'It is just assurances all the way and no implementation', was the view expressed by Girish Bapat (BJP) and Bala Nandgaonkar (Shiv Sena) and interestingly it was endorsed by Speaker Babasaheb Kupekar. Mr Bapat and Mr Nandgaonkar said the ministers give many assurances, but their implementation was very little. At this juncture, the Speaker said he read may news items about announcements but without their implementation. UNI JM SSS VKG1911.....

TN gets 54 projects of housing, civic amenities for urban poor

New Delhi, Apr 7 (UNI) Tamil Nadu has got 54 projects under the Integrated Housing and Slum Development Programme (IHSDP) and the Basic Services to the Urban Poor (BSUP) scheme. The Ministry of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation approved 30 projects for the state under IHSDP at a cost of Rs 225.67 crore for construction of 17506 houses for the poor. The cost includes the Central share of Rs 169.19 and state share of Rs 56.47.....
