Taxi services on NH 39 affected

Imphal, Apr 7 (UNI) The association of the public transport vehicle owners, providing taxi services along the Imphal-Moreh road on National Highway 39, suspended taxi services along the route indefinitely for the third day today.

The Moreh-Imphal Jeep and Tata Sumo Taxi Service Welfare Association said the service was suspended to protest extortion demands from many underground groups.

Following the stir, transport services to Moreh, the main trading centre between Manipur and Myanmar, were disrupted.

The association said it will continue the stir until the militant organisations withdrew their extortion demands.

Meanwhile, passenger services along the Tiddim road and Imphal-Churachandpur road will also remain suspended indefinitely from tomorrow.

Some militant organisation had demanded Rs 3,000 each from the vehicle owners and to protest the demand, the drivers have decided to stay away from the highway.

Vice Prez Hamid Ansari arrives in Kazakhstan

Astana (Kazakhstan), Apr 7: Vice President Mohammad Hamid Ansari arrived in Kazakhstan's Capital Astana on Sunday evening. During his visit, Ansari will hold talks with Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbaev, and will also meet Senate Chairman K Tokayev and address the Senate. 'Pak, Afghan will jointly combat extremism'

Kabul, April 7: Afghanistan's President Hamid Karzai has reiterated that he will work closely with Pakistan Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani to fight extremism plaguing both countries. "There is no doubt that the continuation of the war on terrorism is a priority for Afghanistan. There is no doubt that Pakistan suffers at the hands of terrorism.This is a joint struggle. If either of us comes up short in this struggle, then we will have harmed our people," Karzai told a press.....
