Hooda for linking MSP with price index

Chandigarh, Apr 7 (UNI) Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda today called for linking Minimum Support Price (MSP) with price index or for evolving a formula to fix MSP.

He also called for reviewing the norms of natural calamities relief fund in the larger interest of the farming community.

He made these demands during his meeting with Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar here.

Mr Hooda urged him that as the cost of investment in agriculture had increased manifold, the MSP should be decided on regional basis in view of the cost of inputs. He added that the State government has been giving a huge subsidy to power utilities for agriculture sector.

He also stressed the Central government should give bonus to the farmers on procurement of wheat.

Mr Hooda said that frost had damaged crops, especially mustard, in the state and the loss was assessed to the tune of Rs 190 crore. He, therefore, demanded that damage caused to crops, including those of horticulture due to frost should be compensated by including frost under the natural calamities relief fund. The norms of the natural calamities relief fund should also be reviewed, he added.

Mr Hooda said that recently rain, hailstorm and winds had damaged standing crops over an area of about one lakh hectares. The adverse weather conditions would affect the specifications of wheat for procurement. He urged Mr Pawar to send a committee to take stock of the situation.

Mr Hooda, who later interacted with mediapersons said the exact loss was being assessed and a 'Girdawari' would be ordered.

Despite loss to standing crops recently, the State government would try to achieve its target of procurement of wheat, he added.

Mr Hooda also apprised the Union Minister about the problem being faced in procuring DAP fertiliser. He also drew the attention of Mr Pawar towards 60,000 tonnes of Bajra procured in the state and said tenders for the same should be invited soon.

Mr Hooda also urged that in view of the demand of Pusa 1121 variety of paddy in the international market, the government should review its decision and farmers should be allowed to export it.
