Demand for engineers increasing: Minister

Chennai, Apr 7 (UNI) The demand for engineering professionals is set to rise in the next ten years due to advances in technology, Union Minister of State for Human Resqurce Development D Purandeswari said.

Delivering the Ninth Graduation day address of the Sri Sai Ram Engineering college here, she said while globalisation and liberalisation hae seen Multi National Companies (MNCs) flocking to India in all sectors, the reform process had also led India to integrate with the global economy.

In the academic year 2006-07, 528 students appeared for the exam, of which 489 students from Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Electrical and Communication Engineering, Information Technology Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science Engineering and Instrumentation and Control Engineering, MCA and MBA were conferred with the degrees.

In all, 194 students had passed with distinction. The college had secured a pass percentage of 93 per cent. Eight students from the engineering stream and nine from the MBA stream obtained University ranks. The University rank holders were presented with a gold ring.

Govt to take steps to check vegetable prices

Thiruvananthapuram, Apr 7:Admitting that Kerala was facing acute price hike of vegetables, Kerala Civil Supplies Minister C Divakaran today said the Government would take all possible measures to check the prices within two days. Talking to mediapersons here, he said the Government would take immediate measures to procure vegetables from neighbouring Tamil Nadu, besides stern measures to control the monopoly of procuring vegetables from Idukki. 3 Assam Rifles jawans killed in road accident

Kohima, Apr 07 (UNI) At least three Assam Rifles(AR) were killed and 28 others injured, when the bus in which they were traveling, fell into a 300-feet deep gorge on National Highway 39, about 20 kms from here this morning. State shuts down on ULFA's 'Raising Day'

Guwahati, Apr 7: Assam observed a near-total closure today on ULFA's 'Raising Day', with confusion contributing to a mostly unsponsored bandh rather than any real threat.
