CPI resorts to road blockade in Pondy

Puducherry, Apr 7 (UNI) As many as 165 workers of the Communist Party of India, including 112 women, were arrested when they put up a road blockade here to press their demands.

Demanding proper roads, drainage facility and changing of pipelines, the party workers took out a precession from the Sebastian church to the Ajantha junction and put up a road blockade.

Meanwhile, the Vikram Tempo Owners Association members observed a fast near the new bus stand to condemn the attack on Tamils in Karnataka over the Hogenakkal issue and press for an amicable settlement to the issue.

The Pududhcerry Auxilary Nurses Midwife Welfare Association took out a procession and staged a demonstration behind the Government General Hospital to condemn the ''injustice'' caused to them in the 6th pay commission recommendations.

The nurses, with their eyes blindfolded with a black cloth, took out the procession from the Venkatasubbareddiyar statue to the Legislative Assembly, but were stopped by the police behind the GH, where they staged the demonstration.

Meanwhile, employees of the Sri Aurobindo Press here staged a two-hour dharna in front of the Press to condemn the ''highhandness'' of the management and the termination of Tamil employees.

Nawaz Sharif still an offender despite pardon: Pak Supreme Court

Islamabad, Feb.2 (ANI): The Supreme Court of Pakistan has ruled that though former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has been pardoned in the case relating to his disqualification from contesting the by-elections, he still remains an offender.According to The News, Justice Sheikh Hakim Ali observed that Sharif was still an offender and not eligible to contest the elections.Earlier, during the hearing, Sharif's lawyer Akram Sheikh argued that the case against his client does not have legality to stand in.....
