Applications sought for Rajiv Gandhi award

New Delhi, Apr 7 (UNI) Chairman of the advisory panel of Rajiv Gandhi National Sadbhavna Award, Dr Karan Singh today invited proposals by June 30, 2008, for the said award.

The award carries a citation and cash prize of Rs 3 lakh to be given either to individuals or institutions for making contributions in promoting commual harmony, a press release said here.

Mother Teresa, K R Narayanan and Ustad Bismillah Khan were among the previous recipients of the award.

India-China trade through Nathu La to start as per schedule

Gangtok, Apr 7 (UNI) The third edition of annual border trade between Sikkim and Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR) of China through the 14,400 -ft Nathu La pass in East Sikkim will commence undeterred as per schedule. The Indo-China trade via Nathula is expected to start on the scheduled date of May one. However, China's view on this year's trade was yet to be known. FAO expects rice production to rise by 1.8 per cent in 2008

New Delhi, Apr 7 (UNI) World rice production is expected to increase in 2008 by 12 million tonnes or 1.8 per cent, assuming normal weather conditions, United Nations agency Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO) has said. FAO said in Rome recently that sizable production increases are expected in all the major Asian rice producing countries, especially Bangladesh, China, India, Indonesia, Myanmar, the Philippines and Thailand, where supply and demand are currently rather stretched......
