Kohima, Apr 07 (UNI) At least three Assam Rifles(AR) were killed and 28 others injured, when the bus in which they were traveling, fell into a 300-feet deep gorge on National Highway 39, about 20 kms from here this morning.
AR sources said that the condition of eight of them was critical.
The private bus, which was hired by the Assam Rifles to carry their jawans from Dimapur to Imphal in Manipur to the Headquarters of Inspector General of Assam Rifles(South) there, was coming in the convoy of the Assam Rifles vehicles.
On reaching the spot, the vehicle, which was going uphill, suddenly stopped and started going back and slipped down to the gorge. The driver of the bus has reportedly been absconding after the accident.
The AR officials, while talking to the UNI coorespondent, who visited the spot, said that the accident occurred due to mechanical failure and the two jawans died on the spot.
The body of one of them, Havildar N K Sinha, was retrieved about two hours after the accident took place, as it went under the vehicle during the accident. One of the jawans, who tried to resist the weight of the vehicle to save his infant girl, is in serious condition in the ICU. His wife and the child managed to escape with minor injuries.
Two of the eight seriously injured jawans have been evacuated to Rangapahar and Guwahati Army Hospitals by helicopters.
The ill-fated bus was carrying a total of 34 passengers, including two women and a child. One of the three victims has not yet been identified as he had no Identity Card or any document on him.
All the Assam Rifles units in and around Kohima have sent rescue teams to the spot. The office of the Inspector General of Assam Rifles (IGAR) has also alerted all its units to provide all possible help to the injured and stranded jawans and officials of the convoy.
