2 Indians lose appeal against conviction in Singapore

Singapore, Apr 7 (UNI) Two Indian nationals lost their appeal today against a conviction for having submitted forged educational documents in their applications for Employment Pass (EP), said the Manpower Ministry here today.

Ramasamy Alagu Pandian had submitted a forged engineering diploma in his application, and his wife, Alagu Pandian Latha had a forged Masters degree.

Ramasamy was sentenced to eight weeks' imprisonment last December for abetting his wife in her EP application using forged educational qualification. He was also fined 4000 Singapore dollars for making a false declaration in his own EP application.

Latha was sentenced to two weeks' imprisonment for furnishing false information in her application. The Ministry said the duo's appeal was dismissed by the High Court on 27 March 2008.

Under Singapore's Employment of Foreign Manpower Act, Ramasamy could have been fined up to 15,000 Singapore dollars or jailed for up to a year, or both.

The Ministry warned that employers and foreign workers who fail to notify it of false information submitted in their work pass applications, could also face a fine of up to 5,000 Singapore dollars or a jail term of up to six months, or both.
