Wage parity for 'safai karamcharis' sought

Phagwara, Apr 6 (UNI) National Safai Karamchari Commission Chairperson Santosh Chaudhry today sought wage parity for 'safai karamcharis' in all states.

Talking to mediapersons here she said that though the Union Government has set up a separate Wages Board for safai karamcharis, but this section were being discriminated against by several state governments.

She reiterated her commitment to end the practice of lifting night soil by March next year.She calimed that despite several reminders, scavengers were being forced to lift night soil in many states including Madhya Pardesh, Bihar, Uttar Pardesh, Gujrat, West Bengal and Maharashtra.

Ms Chaudhry also claimed that several state governments were diverting the funds sent by the Commission for the welfare of safai karamcharis and merly one percent of the funds were being spent for the specified purpose.

Electronic media must play a greater role: Antony

New Delhi, June 20: Defence Minister A K Antony today said the electronic media had emerged as the most powerful communication tool in the country, and asked private television channels to play a ''greater'' role in the emerging socio-economic scenario.He was inaugurating the National Bureau and the studio of "Jaihind TV," a Malayalam channel sponsored by the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC), at the YWCA complex here.Mr Antony said there were still space for more new channels......
