Rameshwar Oraon: Long journey from economist to politician

New Delhi, Apr 6 (UNI) From being a deft economist to an upright police officer to an astute politician, life has been a long odyssey for Dr Rameshwar Oraon, who by sheer dint of determination and perseverance not only pursued several dreams but also turned them into reality.

Dr Oraon, who was born in Daltongan district of Jharkhand, did his MA and PhD in economics from Patna and Ranchi Universities, respectively.

He was selected to serve in the Indian Economic Service in 1971, followed by a stint in the Indian Police Service the next year.

Two years later, he entered the wedlock with Ragini Minz and has two children.

Dr Oraon has also served as the Superintendent of Police in major tribal districts of Jharkhand like Ranchi, Hazaribagh, Singhbhum, Sahebganj and Santhal Pargana.

Before joining politics, he has served as the Regional Inspector General of Police in Chota Nagpur, Jharkhand; Chief of CID, Patna Zone; and ADG of Police in Jharkhand.

He resigned from the service to join politics in February 2004 and was later elected to the 14th Lok Sabha from the Lohardaga (ST) constituency in Jharkhand, on a Congress ticket.

The 61-year-old Oraon has also been a member of several significant committees, including Commitee on Social Justice and Empowerment, Consultative Committee of Ministry of Railways, Consultative Committee of Ministry of Finance and the Executive Committee of the Congress Parliamentary Party.

A voracious reader and writer of the affairs of the tribal communities and their problems, Dr Oraon's evinces keen interest in sports as well. He heads several sports bodies, including the Jharkhand Hockey Men's Association, Jharkhand Volley Ball Association, Jharkhand Wushu Association and Tug of War Association.

His interest is not only restricted to sports but also encompasses economics, Buddhism and current affairs.

SC to hear Centre's quota petition on July 31

New Delhi, July 26: The Supreme Court will hear on July 31 the application of the Centre seeking a vacation of the stay against the implemantation of the 27 per cent quota to OBCs in Centrally-run educational institutions of higher studies. A bench comprising Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan, Justices R V Raveendran and Dalveer Bhandari fixed the date of the Centre's application during the hearing of petition of challenging the government notification issued on.....
