Nepal poll body calls for coop with intl observers

Kathmandu, Apr 6: The Election Commission (EC) of Nepal has appealed to all political parties to cooperate with international election observer missions during the April 10 Constituent Assembly (CA) polls.

"The observers are here at our invitation. Thus the Election Commission appeals to all the concerned individuals to extend their sincere cooperation to carry on the duties of observers without creating any obstructions in words or acts/behavior," the EC said on Saturday. The commission also said the international observers are expected to carry on their respective duties remaining within the international norms and standards of elections and the given code of conduct.

European Union, the Carter Center, UNMIN and a number of other international organisations and some governments are monitoring the election.

Meanwhile, Peaceful demonstrations and rallies are being taken out in Nepal to encourage civil society participation in the elections in a non-violent manner.

The peaceful rallies were taken out in Biratnagar, Nepalgunj, Dolakha and Kathmandu.

Around two dozens professional organisations participated in the rally. Participants carried play cards demanding free and fair environment for the polls.

Meanwhile, Maoist leader Prachanda has aid that his CPN-Maoist party will accept any outcome of the upcoming Constituent Assembly (CA) polls and claimed that the allegations that it would return to its former war roots if the election results were not in favour as baseless.

Issuing a press release in Kathmandu on Saturday, Prachanda stated that the party was committed to the holding of the CA polls.

He also indicated that they were not against any international election observation teams.

Prachanda instructed the party's leaders and cadres not to be involved in any activities that might disrupt the polls and not to repeat their past mistakes.

The party also claimed that opposition parties had conspired to defame the party and its youth front, Young Communist League, by highlighting "minor" incidents.
