Munaf, Powar return to Indian team; R P Singh gets axe

Ahmedabad, Apr 6 (UNI) Pace bowler Munaf Patel and Mumbai off-spinner Ramesh Powar will make a comeback in to the Indian squad, while R P Singh has been axed from the 16-member squad announced here today for the third and final Test against South Africa beginning in Kanpur from April 11.

The selection committee which met here today under the chairmanship of Dilip Vengsarkar took over two hours to decide on the composition of the squad for the third Test, which India has to win to level the series.

Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Niranjan Shah, who is also the convenor of the selection commitee meeting, announced the team to the waiting mediapersons at the team hotel here.

He said, ''the team still has some fitness concerns regarding captain Anil Kumble and young speedster Ishant Sharma. Two selectors would be present in Kanpur and their fitness assessment will be done on April 10 before a final decision is taken.'' ''The team will then be shortened to 14 members,'' Shah announced.

He also informed that an extra spinner in the form of Ramesh Powar was selected by the selectors to give protection to Anil Kumble as the team is likely to go in with three spinners in the match.

The team: Anil Kumble (c), Wasim Jaffer, Virender Sehwag, Rahul Dravid, V V S Laxman, Sourav Ganguly, Yuvraj Singh, Mohd Kaif, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Irfan Pathan, Harbhajan Singh, S Sreesanth, Munaf Patel, Piyush Chawla, Ramesh Powar, Ishant Sharma.

CPI (M) does not rule out supporting a Govt. including Congress

New Delhi, Feb.8 (ANI): The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has not ruled out the possibility of supporting a government with Congress party as its part at the centre after Lok Sabha elections, though such a situation was improbable.In an interview to a news channel, CPI (M) General Secretary Prakash Karat said:"That is our first priority. At no cost will we support a Congress-led government. We will work for a secular government, but what shape it takes I can't say.....
