Kakinada to have floating power plant soon

Kakinada,Andhra Pradesh, Apr 6 (UNI) The port city of Kakinada on the East Coast would soon have a floating power plant of 200 MW capacity, paving way for accelerated industrial development of the region.

The floating power plant, the first-of-its-kind in Asia, till recently stationed in Goa and presently working off the Mangalore Coast, was likely to be shifted to Kakinada on a permanent basis under the project cleared by the state Government.

Industrial house GMR has embarked upon taking up this prestigious power project.

Talking to UNI, Commissioner of State Ports K V Brahmananda Reddy said ''the State Government has cleared the application of GMR industrial house for allotment of 57 acre of port land behind the port administrative office complex for its electrical installations and distribution network.

''The floating power plant is expected to be moved here from Mangalore by July end or August first week.'' The tourism corporation was exploring the possibility of developing the 'hope island' as a tourist spot, by introducing ferry service between Kakinada and the island.

The ship building yard and a dry dock proposed to be set up near Kakinada would also materialise soon, he said.

Electronic media must play a greater role: Antony

New Delhi, June 20: Defence Minister A K Antony today said the electronic media had emerged as the most powerful communication tool in the country, and asked private television channels to play a ''greater'' role in the emerging socio-economic scenario.He was inaugurating the National Bureau and the studio of "Jaihind TV," a Malayalam channel sponsored by the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC), at the YWCA complex here.Mr Antony said there were still space for more new channels......
