Diabetes prevention messages through post in TN

Chennai, Apr 6: In a bid to create awareness on the implications of diabetes, Postal Department in co-operation with M V Hospital for Diabetes and Diabetes Research Centre, a WHO collaborating Centre, have launched a first-ever campaign --diabetes prevention message through post-- today.

More than ten lakh special postal covers would carry the message to a large population across the country to commemorate the 'World Health Day.' After unveiling the special cover, Principal Chief Postmaster General Indira Krishnakumar announced that ten lakh inland letters with messges on prevention of diabetes would be available for usage in post offices, ensuring that the communique reached people, who were less aware of the disease.

''Beside the inland letters, postmen in certain parts of the city would also deliver leaflets about the facts and myths of diabetes for the next six months along with mails,'' she added.

She said the special cover would carry ten awareness messages about diabetes and its implications.

Speaking on the occasion, State Health Secretary V K Subburaj said following the increase in diabetes patients across the state, the government had started tying up with private hospitals to cope up with the demand.

Mr Subburaj admitted that the government hospitals alone could not provide adequate treatment to diabetes patients.

State Health Department Director P Padmanabhan also released the 'Patient Booklet - FAQ's on Diabetes' and offered the first copy to Postmaster General M S Ramanujam.
