BJP to contest alone in Assembly polls: Yeddyurappa

Bangalore, Apr 6: Contrary to the statement given by the party central leadership, BJP leader and former Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa today said the party would contest the coming Assembly elections on its own. The BJP central leadership had said in Delhi that it would like to have an alliance with its NDA ally JD(U) in the elections.

''We are going to contest in all the 244 Assembly seats without forging any alliance. We will make it clear to our central leadership that the state leadership is against any alliance in the wake of betrayal by the JD(S). I am confident that the national leaders will accept our position,'' he told newspersons here. ''The whole nation is looking at Karnataka polls. We are confident to lead the party to victory,'' he said.

Mr Yeddyurappa said the state unit had finalised the names for about 150 constituencies through consensus and the list would be submitted to the Central Election Committee by April 10.

For rest of the constituencies, the party was scouting for the best candidates available.

''There has been 20 to 30 aspirants for each segments. We will select suitable candidates and convince the others,'' he said adding that he had toured 110 segments along with state unit president Sadananda Gowda.

If voted to power, the BJP, among other things, would check the large scale exodus of people from rural areas to the cities and at the same time improve infrastructure facilities in the urban areas.

''We will transform Bangalore to a city with best infrastructure in next five years,'' he added.
