Workers protest against suspension of recruitment process

Nashik, Apr 5 (UNI) Workers of the Government of India Press, Gandhinagar, held demonstrations today against the suspension of the recruitment process here.

''The vacant posts should be filled up soon. The suspension of the recruitment process should be removed and those who have been selected till now, should be allowed to join work immediately.

These are our main demands,'' National Press Workers' Union, Gandhinagar General Secretary Vijay Waghela told UNI.

During the agitation, the workers, shouted slogans against the suspension of the recruitment process. The present strength of the Gandhinagar Press is 338.

The recruitment process for nearly 350 more posts began a month ago. Applications were invited for various posts -- security guards, sanitation workers, nurses, binders, peons, mechanics, assistant mechanics and attendants. In the first phase, interviews for the posts of nurses, sanitation workers, security guards and carpenters were conducted and the list of the selected candidates was issued. The selected 48 were given forms for character verification. Appointment letters were to be handed over to them, but, in the meanwhile, the notice of suspension of the recruitment process was issued on April 3 by the Union Urban Development Ministry.

Meanwhile, interviews for 127 binders, 82 attendants and five peon posts were to be conducted on April 16-17. The recruitment process was taking place after 23 years in the press. Therefore its suspension had caused anger among the present workers as well as the aspirants.

''We spoke to the management officials. They assured us to put forward our views to the higher authorities. We would hold a gate meeting on Monday. A resolution would be passed on it and forwarded to the management,'' Mr Waghela told UNI.
