Sonia to kickstart election campaign with women rally in J and K

Jammu, Apr 5 (UNI) Congress President Sonia Gandhi will launch the party's election campaign in Jammu and Kashmir by organising a women rally here on April 12.

Addressing a press conference this afternoon, Member Parliament and All India Mahila Congress President Prabha Thakur, who is here on a two-day visit, said Ms Gandhi would be visiting the winter capital of the state to address the women fraternity during a public rally.

Thousands of women workers and leaders were expected to attend the the rally, Dr Thakur said, adding the Congress President wanted to strengthen the female section of the society and this was the main idea behind addressing the rally.

In the upcoming State Assembly elections, women would be given special preference and also the mandate to contest elections in different constituencies, she added.

President Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) and Union Minister for Water Resources Saif-ud-Din Soz said Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad and Ms Gandhi wanted to give special status to the women fraternity of the country.

''In a Congress women rally at Rajasthan, around one lakh women were expected but the number was over three lakh, so we are expecting a mass participation in the rally here. The party is committed to an overall development and promotion of all sections of the society,'' Prof Soz said.

Tibetans go on hunger strike in Kullu

Kullu (Himachal Pradesh), Apr 5: Tibetans-in-exile living in Kullu have begun an indefinite hunger strike on Saturday to protest against alleged Chinese suppression in Tibet. The Tibetan protest has spread across the Himachal Pradesh from Dharamshala, the seat of the Tibetan government-in-exile. "We have started this hunger strike from today and the strike will continue till atrocities of the Chinese Government is stopped on the Tibetans," said Thokme, a Tibetan Youth Congress representative. The agitation is followed with a signature campaign.....

MP continues to receive light rainfall

Bhopal, Apr 5 (UNI) Courtesy an upper air cycer built over eastern Madhya Pradesh, light rainfall continued in most parts of the state bringing down temperature by 3-4 degree Celsius below normal. ''The phase of rainfall is expected to get over in a few days as the upper air cycer is moving towards Chhattisgarh,'' a Regional Meteorological Department spokesperson said. Showers accompanied with lightning was predicted at isolated places in the state except Hoshangabad division......

Bitta for third party involvement in Indo-Pak talks

Jalandhar, Apr 5 (UNI) All India Anti-Terrorist Front Chairman Maninderjit Singh Bitta today advocated government-sponosered welfare for terrorist-hit families including civilians, para-military forces and defence personnel. Talking to mediapersons here, Mr Bitta said that instead of paying one-time compensation to the victims' family, the government should take responsibility for the rehabilitation of these families. He said in this regard he would file a PIL in the Delhi High Court for providing free education.....
