Rs 4,000 crore for state tourism

Kolkata, April 5: The state tourism department has received Rs 4,000 crores investment proposals from the private entrepreneurs, State tourism minister Manab Mukherjee claimed on Friday. He was speaking on the occasion of unveiling of the new tourism policy of West Bengal.

"The department is now dealing with investment proposals worth Rs 4,000 crores for the tourism industry. We will sign two MoUs with private parties tomorrow," he said.

Announcing the new policy, Mr Mukherjee said that the focus would be on nature-based, cultural, religious and contemporary tourism like shopping and medical. The state government will encourage public-private-partnership (P-P-P) model to improve tourism infrastructure.

The policy also welcomes private investment in the tourism sector. "We will announce a separate package of incentives to provide encouragement to the tourism industry," state tourism secretary Bijoy Chatterjee said.


In addition to this, the state tourism department will, in consultation with the land revenue department, and urban development department and the district authorities, identify and earmark land which can be made available for tourism-related projects.
